Solid, Semi-Transparent, or Transparent Deck Stain?

Each finish has a different lifespan, look, and re-coat schedule. Here's how to pick.

Transparent: shows full grain, lasts 1–2 seasons, easiest to re-coat. Semi-transparent: tinted grain, 2–4 seasons, our most-specced. Solid: opaque, 4–6 seasons, hides grain entirely. New cedar? Go semi-transparent. Old, weathered deck? Solid is usually the rescue.
