How Often Should You Repaint Your Home's Exterior?

Climate, siding material, and paint quality all drive the answer. Here's our rule of thumb by region.

Home office with a muted blue accent wall and white built-in shelving

Most exteriors need a full repaint every 7–10 years. In humid-subtropical climates expect 5–7 years. Arid climates can stretch to 12 years if a UV-blocking coating was used. Inspect south and west elevations annually — that's where failure starts.

Watch for: chalking, hairline cracks at caulk lines, peeling around windows, and mildew on shaded elevations. Catch it early and you'll spot-prime and re-coat instead of stripping the whole house.
