Lead Paint in Pre-1978 Homes: What You Legally Have to Do
EPA RRP rule, when a certified firm is required, and what containment actually looks like.
Any home built before 1978 is presumed to contain lead paint. Disturbing more than 6 sq ft of interior or 20 sq ft of exterior triggers the EPA RRP rule — only RRP-certified firms can perform the work. Containment uses plastic sheeting, HEPA vacuums, and wet-scraping. All waste is bagged and labeled.
